HE PERCEIVED NOT WHEN SHE LAY DOWN - Genesis 19:33

Genesis 19:33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

Lot lived in the mountains alone with his two daughters. Lot lived a long ways away from any other humans. One night, his daughters give him wine to drink. Lot drank so much wine that his daughter was able to have sexual intercourse with him without him knowing. Lot may not have chosen to have intercourse with his daughters, but he did choose to drink wine that night that rendered him unable to control his actions.

Lot could have made plenty of excuses as to why it was permissible for him to become drunk with wine. Lot surely could not hurt anyone since he was so far away from any civilization. He was lonely and what better way to wash away all his loneliness than a drink of wine. Lot could have had many excuses but that does not mean that he escapes liability for putting himself in a drunken state.

The daughters of Lot understood a weakness of their father Lot. They knew that there was some wine that Lot liked to drink that was extremely strong. While Lot’s daughters are accountable to God for their actions, Lot also would be accountable for allowing himself to drink wine that would render him unable to control his actions.

Lot may not have chosen to have intercourse with his daughters but he did choose to drink the wine that rendered him unconscious. It was still Lot’s sperm that created life in the womb of his daughters.

If someone were to jump off the Sears Tower in Chicago and claim that they had no intention of committing suicide, you would think that they were crazy. There are certain consequences that naturally occur if one were to jump off the building. What if someone were to jump off the Sears Tower with a parachute? What if the parachute opened, but because of all the wind coming between the tall buildings, the jumper was blown into a building where the parachute was unable to hold its form and thus the man fell to his death.

The differences between the two men in most people’s eyes is that one man died as a result of his direct violations of the laws of nature while the other person died due to an accident. It is because of that kind of thinking that most people will not judge Lot for committing a great sin by drinking wine which thus enabled his daughters to commit incest. However, the man who jumped with a parachute while not as blatantly violating the laws of nature, he was committing a dangerous act in a setting where there was a high risk of death. Lot is no different than this man, he may not have intended his actions, but he is still liable for the results.

We do not always know what the consequences of our sins will be. When we step out of the perfect will of God and do what we want, when we want, we start a chain of events that could cost us more than we are willing to pay. That is why it is prudent to avoid sliding down the slippery slope of sin to begin with and instead, remain true HIS perfect will.

It is not always easy living the straight and narrow. To do so, you must daily add temperance to your life and say no to the ways of this world. As you say no to the things that this world has to offer you, you will be free to continue to seek God and see exactly what HE would have you to do. There is great freedom that results when you are not worried about the consequences of sin.
